Gallery Visit

Exhibition at the Rueff gallery by the seniors from the Studio and Technology,
Fine Arts and Photography Program

The works that those students done do really impress me, especially seeing some of my classmates's work, both from the classes taken from you, Digital Imaging and History of Contemporary Photography.

First, Sara's weave work as self portrait remind me of two techniques. One is pointillism from impressionism, for example, the painting done by Georges Seurat 'A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte', all these dots make a difference even if you seeing from far away. And Sara is sort of shifting these dots a little bit  to make transformation of the image, which adds to a sense of emotion. The other one is the digital pixels, the world we are living in depends so much on technology. It is challenging the notion of art, when comparing a time consuming pointillism painting with a quick snapshot photograph by a smart phone.

Second, it is the work by Zane, which shows the social and individual nature of human society as a whole using paper cut outs, toothpicks and poster boards as a frame. From his work, it tells us that society no matter where you live pigeonholes people into groups that they may not associate with or believe all that some within that group believe. As a society we should be focusing on the individual nature rather than a grouping mentality because we lose important issues that may not fall in one group or another.

Thirdly, the Camel of Cigarettes, it is fine art work when seeing from the distance, but when approaching it and seeing every single cigarette, it makes you feel the harm of smoking.

Lastly, the video by Tyler. It is a funny video that he put himself in those scenes with laughable poses. This kind of contrast in scenes and behaviors add a sense of humor to his work.
